新之助よ、ちとたずねるが例えばどこにも行き場のない隣人同士が考え方の違いから 争いとなったとする。どう思うか? 父上、それは仕方がないことと思います。 では、その隣人同士が不本意ながらいずれかが負け、いずれかが勝ったとする、 しかし、争ったという心の重みは勝った者にも、負けたものにものしかかる。 これを勝ち負けで見て良いものであろうか? いいえ、無益な争いに勝敗の意味はないと思います。 新之助よ、大概の戦争もそのようなものだよ、一度戦争になると多くの人命が 犠牲になる。しかし、戦争とは犠牲者をおぎなう戦利などない。 得るものがあるとするならば、それは勝利国は怨みを得、そして利己に利ある限り 掠め取ろうとする業を得る。 また、敗戦国は苦しみに眠れぬ夜を得る。戦の業とは他を殺すことにより、自らを殺す 者を得るという業をいう。そしてそれが満ちることを悪が実るという。 さらに悲しいのはこの業を除くことが困難なことをいうのである。 わるかな新之助。 ハイ、父上。 だが新之助よ、わが身の不利も顧みず、また自らの命をも惜しむこともなく民を 守り、国を守る兵士は勝敗にかかわらず称えられるべき戦士である。新之助よ、 ポーランドの騎馬隊は装備の遅れがあるにもかかわらず、民を守るために 、国を守るために命を惜しまずに戦った。結果にかかわらずその行動と決意は まさに称えるに相応しい戦士であると父は思う。 また、このような立派な戦士を相手にと戦った兵士が敵の勇気と戦いぶりを 称えることがあるならばそれは自らを称える者を得るということである。 そうした騎士道、武士道がある時、それが唯一の負の連鎖に杭を打つことが出来る 可能性があるがのう。 |
